John Todd diaries, 1849, 1855.

The volume is Captain Todd's field diary kept during General Selby Harney's punitive expedition against the Dakota Indians in 1855. It contains several detailed sketches of the route from Fort Leavenworth to the Black Hills, including the topography of the Battle of Ash Hollow (Sept. 3), and describes buffalo herds, military life, Black Hills scenery, and Todd's trip to Sioux City, Iowa. The photographs and filmstrip document a copy made by Todd of the notes of Captain Stewart Van Vliet on a journey between forts Laramie and Pierre (Aug. 1849), including detailed maps of the route.
